While living in Italy, I became fascinated by the structures local Bresciani used to hunt songbirds. While the practice is mostly illegal today, you can still see the structures (called "roccoli") all over the province. While some roccoli can be giant, extravagant, and with massive artificial scaffolding, most are more humble, made using an isolated group of trees in a field or on a mountain ridge.
I am incredibly interested in this intersection of the desire to preserve century-long human traditions and the critical need to change our behavior and relationships with the other critters we share the earth with.
